Shellbrook approves COVID friendly celebration for 2021 grad class

May 6, 2021 | 11:00 AM

The Town of Shellbrook is taking steps to ensure this year’s graduating class at W.P. Sandin High School is properly recognized for their achievement.

Council has approved a request to hang banners, depicting the faces of each of the grads, on Main Street. Mayor Amund Otterson told paNOW a similar initiative was done last year.

“It was well received by the community and it makes Main Street look great,” he said.

Due to COVID restrictions that remain in place, there remains a great deal of uncertainty with respect to what sort of celebration, if any, the grads can partake in this year. Noting plans have yet to be finalized, Principal Karissa Klaassen said the school was forced to think outside the box.

“This is something for the kids to look forward to and we can celebrate with them regardless,” she said.

Kim Lamotte, a spokesperson for the grad committee, said they are still unsure whether this year’s grad celebration will come in the form of a virtual event or something that can be held outdoors.

“We are always ready to pivot whenever we can but we are hoping we can make it as special as we can and showcase [the grads] to everybody,” she said.

The banners will be going up the last week of May and displayed throughout the month of June.
