Sharks Swim Club excited about opportunity to host meets at new rec complex

Fresh off the approval of the design by city council, the Prince Albert Sharks Swim Club says they’re pleased with the plan for the new recreation complex.

Currently the Sharks swim out of the five-lane Frank J Dunn Pool, which is too small to host competitions and too shallow to dive in, club president Jeannette Murphy told paNOW.

The newly approved eight-lane design will allow the team to host local, regional and perhaps even provincial swim meets.

“It means a lot to the Sharks,” Murphy said. “It’s showing that we aren’t just a small club but we are a club that wants to grow and be able to host these kinds of events.”

In a letter to city council, the Sharks estimated the economic impact of each provincial competition—which typically attract 200 swimmers from across the province and run for three to four days—at around $70,000 for hotel rooms and meals.

The new aquatic centre will also provide greatly improve training opportunities for swimmers.

“With this new facility we’ll actually be able to have our swimmers diving off our starting blocks into the pool,” she said.

Ultimately, it’s an exciting time for aquatic sports in P.A.

Murphy said the Sharks are looking forward to working with the city and with other aquatic groups like synchro or diving to grow their sports.
