Weather roller coaster ride ahead for Sask. residents

Mar 26, 2021 | 2:07 PM

An epic battle between the cold air to the north and warming air to the south brings all kinds of spring weather to Saskatchewan including the potential for special light displays.

“The weekend’s forecast indicates mild temperatures, however a very potent weather system moves in Monday bringing lots of snow, wind and a chance of freezing rain affecting the entire province,“ Terri Lang meteorologist with Environment Canada told paNOW.

Lang said to expect all kinds of temperature fluctuations through March and April and to enjoy the warmer temperatures before Monday’s messy weather system moves in.

The current jet stream over central Saskatchewan is causing the weather volatility and the potential to bring with it the phenomenon of springtime lightning, similar to winter lightning.

“You just have to have a separation of the electrical charges in the clouds,” Lang explained. “That is what happens when you get strong unstable weather so there is lots of movement up and down in the cloud. We get the separation of positive and negative charges and that is when you get lightning.”

She said Tuesday the system moves out bringing colder temperatures and blowing snow until the weather rebounds again.

Lang says it is spring in Saskatchewan and the roller coaster will continue through March and April.

The Prince Albert region will have high of 2 Celsius for Saturday and high of 8 C for Sunday with Monday’s forecast of -2 C.

Areas around the Battlefords will see high of 5 C for Saturday and high 10 C for Sunday with Monday’s forecast of -4 C.

The North East region is expected to have high of 2 C for Saturday and 6 C for Sunday, before Monday cools down to 1 C.
