Prince Albert to host the Provincial Mixed Curling Championship

Mar 24, 2021 | 5:18 PM

Sporting events have been rare in Saskatchewan since the COVID-19 pandemic began last year, but curlers in Prince Albert now have a tournament to look forward to.

CurlSask has announced the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Centre (PAGCC) will host the Provincial Mixed Curling Championship Oct. 13 to 17 this year.

Event manager with CurlSask, Bruce Korte told paNOW they’re hopeful the event will go ahead as planned.

“It basically was supposed to be held [at another city] in March actually this time this year but of course our whole season got kind of thrown a curveball as everybody knows. It’s a brand-new event for P.A.,” he said. “That’ll be the start of our season basically for our CurlSask events and it’s a little bit earlier this year because we do have to get a representative for the Mixed Nationals.”

The winner of the event will represent Saskatchewan at the Canadian Mixed Championships in Canmore, Alta. in November.

Korte said the registration will be open in the summer. There will be a maximum of 24 teams, each made up of two men and two women.

He said Prince Albert was chosen for the championship because it hosted it in 2000 and 2018.

“They’ve been great hosts for the mixed, it’s a great bunch of volunteers there, good facility with lots of sheets because you do need a large number of sheets to host an event like this with these teams,” he explained. “They’ve proven in the past they’re much more than capable of doing something like this. We’re just excited about working with P.A. and we know they’re going to do a fantastic job for us.”

Neither the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Centre nor the City of P.A. were immediately available for comment.
