Raiders fall in shootout to Warriors, Danis continues to impress, Serhyenko solid

After starting out their Subway Hub Centre season with a barn-burning 6-3 win over the Regina Pats, the Prince Albert Raiders found themselves in a muddied track on Sunday.

They fell to the Moose Jaw Warriors 2-1 in a shootout. Warriors affiliate forward Brayden Yager won it in the third round of the shootout with a bar-down wrist shot.

After their opening win, Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid wanted his team to stray away from the rink hockey and individual play. Although he felt his team did that to an extent, Habscheid still had a mixed view of his team’s performance.

“Their rust was better, but I didn’t think we played great,” Habscheid said. “Some guys were good, some guys weren’t. I didn’t think our older guys were very good. I thought our younger guys were good and our older guys weren’t.”

The only goals in regulation were scored by each team’s captain. Kaiden Guhle opened the scoring for the Raiders in the second period, with a booming shot to beat former Raider Boston Bilous. Warriors captain Daemon Hunt responded early in the third, beating a partially screened Carter Serhyenko.

On the Raiders’ lone goal, newcomer Logan Danis won the battle along the wall to free up the puck for the Raiders and got an assist on Guhle’s goal. Danis also scored in the season opener, giving him a pair of points in his first two games in Green and Gold.

“Everybody’s just making it easy to fit in, all the older guys are helping me out and making it easy for my first two games,” Danis said. “Really unfortunate that we lost tonight, but hopefully we can get it back next game.”

Raiders’ goaltender Carter Serhyenko stopped 25 of 26 shots he faced as he had to keep his focus throughout the game. He didn’t have much to do in the first two periods, stopping all 10 shots he faced, but then buckled down in the third. Serhyenko made three or four highlight-reel saves in the overtime frame, completely robbing Daemon Hunt with his right pad and Eric Alarie from in front with his blocker.

“It’s important sometimes when there’s breakdowns, your goalie has to bail you out. He did that tonight,” Habscheid said. “And I thought Boston [Bilous] played good on the other side for them. He was good, too.”

Bilous, in fact, was the game’s first star as he made 27 saves and was 2-3 in the shootout.
