Slow down

Lined up for a cause

There was a strong and clear sign of solidarity among some local tow truck companies Wednesday night.

A total of 15 trucks, from four separate companies, lined up along highway 2 north to remind drivers to slow down to 60 km/ hr when passing emergency vehicles. Gateway North Owner Danny Goodwin told paNOW close calls happen on the job almost daily.

“If you’re not paying attention, lots of times there’s a person that doesn’t even pull over and they’ll go by you, missing your mirror by mere inches and you are standing there,” he said.

Goodwin added, some days, it just feels like people don’t respect tow truck drivers at all until they need one.

“Every one of us puts our lives on the line every day we have to go out on the highway,” he said.

Auto Rescue, Lakeland Towing, and Shell River Towing also participated in Wednesday night’s rally. John Medynski owns Lakeland Towing and he tells his drivers every day to watch what they are doing and also watch oncoming traffic.

“If that traffic coming towards you isn’t slowing down, I say you’ve got to stop what you are doing and you’ve got to get into a safe spot. If it takes longer to get someone out, it doesn’t really matter. At least you are going home,'” he said.

Reflecting on his own 25 years in the industry, Medynski said at least one of his drivers is involved in an accident each year, due to other drivers not paying attention.

He also noted that even with all the trucks on the highway, all lit up, there was still one driver who sped past them. Fortunately, a police car was nearby and was able to pull the driver over.

Similar rallies were held on other highways across the province, including one near Wakaw.
