Raiders’ Aquilon gets ‘best’ birthday present

Mar 6, 2021 | 12:50 PM

After isolating at their homes for a week, travelling to the WHL East Division hub centre in Regina, isolating again at the University of Regina student dorms and undergoing two separate COVID-19 tests, the Prince Albert Raiders finally got do something they haven’t done in over a year—have a team skate.

The Raiders had their first skate on Friday morning at the Brandt Centre, where they will play all of their 24 games this upcoming season starting on March 12.

Friday’s first Raider skate was a little bit extra special for Raider defenceman Remy Aquilon, who also turned 20 years old on Friday.

“It’s probably the best present I’ve got on my birthday, that’s for sure,” said Aquilon. “All the guys have been waiting for over a year since we played last. As a team, it’s going to be great for all of us. We’re going to be jumping off the walls to get going here.”

Aquilon was enjoying his first full season as a Raider after being acquired from the Victoria Royals , playing in all 64 games before the season was cut short due to the pandemic. Aquilon scored the lone goal of his career, while also chipping in with five assists.

Not only did he munch minutes on the blueline and work his way up the depth chart, but he also made some memorable connections off the ice.

“It was awesome. When I first got there, I knew Mas [former Raider defenceman Jeremy Masella] from Victoria, but everyone else were super inviting, my billets were awesome, the coaching staff was super easy to talk to,” Aquilon said. “We sort of bonded right away. I’ve made some great friends from this team that I’ll always have for the rest of my life.”

The Raiders last game was on March 8, 2020, a 3-0 defeat to the Winnipeg ICE on the road.

“That was crazy. We didn’t think that would be our last game. We just sort of just played it as a regular game. If we had known, it would have been so different. But it sure is pretty crazy. It’s been a year since I’ve played with the boys. Crazy.”
