Annexation plans

Council supports plans to expand eastern city limits

The City of Prince Albert is moving ahead with the next phase of plans to annex a 45 acre parcel of land on the city’s eastern boundary.

The proposal to acquire the land from the R.M. of Prince Albert had strong support at Monday night’s council meeting.

The city’s most immediate plans for the parcel involve using it to connect Byars Street with Highway 302. The move is designed to decrease traffic congestion in the Crescent Acres area.

“It’s something that residents of both Ward 5 and Ward 6 badly want,” Ward 5 Coun. Dennis Ogrodnick, told his colleagues, explaining his constituents had expressed the need for a northern access to Crescent Acres at community meetings. “I’m happy our Director [of Planning and Development] is moving forward with this.”

Coun. Ted Zurakowski, echoed Ogrodnick’s comments, adding the new road would improve traffic flow in the entire city, not just Crescent Acres.

“This is a much needed expansion, development and evolution of our city,” he said.

The engineering and design of the new road is expected to cost around $200,000. A further $700,000 for its construction will be included in the 2022 city budget, according to a city report.

A timeline included in the report indicates the multi-step annexation process could be complete by late 2021.

Next steps involve negotiating a financial settlement for the annexation.
