Going out with a bang

Final week of Prince Albert Winter Festival wraps up with two drive-in events

Feb 18, 2021 | 8:00 AM

With warmer temperatures coming soon, people will be able to get outside to enjoy the final week of the Prince Albert Winter Festival.

Despite the festival not having many outdoor aspects this year, residents will be able to go to two drive-in events this week.

A fireworks display will be launched from Kinsmen Field Friday night at 8 p.m. This is a drive-in event and can be viewed from the Art Hauser Centre and Carnival Bingo parking lots. Those in attendance will have to remain in their vehicle and will have to park two metres from any other vehicles.

Winter Festival president Bev Erickson said with the weather changing they’re hoping they get a really good turnout and are happy with how the festival has gone this year.

“We’re very happy with the limited things we could do,” she said. “We’re really missing the outdoor events this year; the dog sled racing, the king and queen trapper events.”

Those who go to the fireworks show can tune into 106.1 FM at 7:30 p.m. for the event announcements.

A drive-thru Fish Fry at the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre will also take place Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Coordinator of the event, Taras Kachkowski said the event is cash only.

“It is very different this year. Usually we have a little tent set up outside the Alfred Jenkins [Field House], which is how we’ve done it the last few years since I’ve been on the board,” Kachkowski explained.

He said frying fish out in the cold has its challenges but since they’re doing it at the Exhibition Centre this year they’ll be inside. They will also be taking COVID-19 precautions and wearing personal protective equipment. He explained it will be an easy process for those who come to the drive-thru. Once you’ve put your order in and have paid, someone will bring your food out to your car.

The supplier of the seafood is Bev’s Fish and Seafood Ltd. and organizers have graciously received other supplies and support from other local businesses.

“This was kind of a year where, well, lets do what we can and keep as much of the tradition alive and hopefully next year when hopefully everything’s better, we can kind of resume everything in the winter festival in its entirety,” Kachkowski said.

On the menu for the Fish Fry includes a fish and chip platter for $15, just fish and chips for $12, chicken fingers and fries for $10 and a plate of fries for $5.

Kachkowski said they’re still looking for volunteers to help out during the event and those interested can contact the Winter Festival.

Other winter festival events include the 50th annual Country North Show webstream Thursday at 7 p.m., on Saturday is the webstream of the Country North Reunion Show at 7 p.m., and finally on Sunday is a livestream of the Gospel Show from the EA Rawlinson Centre. To purchase tickets to watch the stream contact the EA Rawlinson Centre. There are also still tickets available for in-person seating.

The Prince Albert Winter Festival will also be doing their last 50-50 and raffle tickets draw this weekend to help fund the events. For more information visit their website or their Facebook page.
