MELFORT, Sask. – Team Alberta is reminding farmers and farm workers who drive large trucks about an important deadline.

The testing for the Class 1 Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) equivalency under the Alberta Transportation farmer and farm worker extension program is March 1.

Team Alberta, which consists of Alberta Barley, Alberta Canola, Alberta Pulse grower groups, are aware of concerns drivers are experiencing trying to complete training and testing prior to the deadline.

Anyone who must complete their MELT road test before March 1 should contact Alberta Transportation to book a road test date.

Team Alberta stated if you are a farmer or farm worker who has successfully applied to the extension program and are experiencing issues with training and testing in this timeframe, contact Alberta Transportation.

A former federal minister of agriculture and agri-food will receive 4-H Canada’s Distinguished Alumni award.

Lyle Vanclief has been involved with 4-H since he was 12-years-old. He has also served as a 4-H club leader, as well as in his service to various organizations in his community of Prince Edward County, Ont.

His involvement in crop sciences and as a farmer led him to a career as an elected official, serving as a member of Parliament for Prince Edward-Hastings from 1988 to 2004. He was minister of agriculture from 1997 to 2003

The Distinguished Alumni award recognizes the outstanding leadership and contributions of one of 4-H’s 350,000 alumni.
