Hope and the Future: Raiders look to get back on the ice

Dec 25, 2020 | 12:00 PM

The COVID-19 pandemic makes 2020 a year many may prefer to forget but there is hope for the future. We’ve decided to make that the focus of our series of end-of-year stories.

Although they haven’t played a game since March 8, the Prince Albert Raiders are still the defending Western Hockey League Champions after their 2019 league title victory.

But as much as they love still holding onto that “defending champion” title, the Raiders would much rather have an opportunity to go get another Ed Chynoweth Cup.

“We’re looking forward to getting back on the ice,” Raiders business manager Michael Scissons said. “That’s ultimately our number one thing we’re looking forward to, is getting back on the ice and getting to play for the fans in the community of Prince Albert. That’s our number one thing on our Christmas list, for every member of the organization.”

The WHL recently postponed their Jan. 8 start date and will meet in January to decide when the season will start.

Throughout the process, as the WHL and other hockey leagues across Canada try to start their season, Scissons has commended both Raider fans for their patience and medical professionals for navigating this situation safely.

“We appreciate the patience and the understanding that they are waiting for us to get back on the ice, and we are committed to playing the season for them,” Scissons said. “I think a lot of this is out of our hands and we’re trusting the medical professionals to make those decisions, which are based on our entire community. But we appreciate their patience and understanding as we continue to evolve with our business in the goal to get back.”
