Second fatal crash on local highways this week

Dec 24, 2020 | 12:40 PM

For the second time in two days a fatal crash has happened on our local roadways.

RCMP are reporting a head-on collision involving a car and SUV late Wednesday afternoon about four kilometres north of Canwood. The highway was blocked for many hours.

The driver of the car, a 39-year-old woman, died at the scene.

Shellbrook/Ahtahkakoop RCMP along with the Prince Albert RCMP Traffic Services Unit, Spiritwood EMS and the Debden Fire Department responded to the incident. Each vehicle was carrying three occupants.

Police said alcohol or drugs are not considered to be factors in the collision at this time.

A 17-year-old male passenger of the car was taken to hospital for what were reported to be minor injuries. A nine-year-old female passenger was taken to hospital for what were reported to be serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the SUV, 78-year-old male, was taken to hospital with what were reported to be minor injuries. The two female passengers of the SUV, ages 56 and 76, were taken to hospital with what were reported to be minor injuries.

Highway 55 was blocked and traffic was re-routed for several hours. The highway resumed to normal traffic at approximately 11:30 p.m.

Monday’s incident

This latest fatal incident follows one on Monday evening when a man and a young boy were killed after their car collided head-on with a truck, west of Prince Albert.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene on Highway 3 shortly after 5:30 p.m.

The preliminary investigation indicates the collision occurred after the eastbound car pulled into the westbound lane. The 30-year-old man from Prince Albert, and the four-year-old boy from Parkside, were both declared deceased by EMS at the scene.

Police did not identify those who were killed but a GoFundMe account set up on behalf of Chance and Carlie Roswell has done so. It has raised over $56,000 by Thursday.
