Prairie farmers support local charities through BASF program

Eight prairie canola growers were able to direct some money to their favourite organizations through the InVigor Community Challenge.

In the first year of the program, growers who share their experiences of growing InVigor canola in 2020 have a chance to win $5,000 to donate to a cause of their choice.

BASF Canada Agricultural Solutions (BASF) received entries from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta.

Saskatchewan farmer Ian McLellan said he picked an outdoor area in Holdfast.

“I have high hopes for what is to come in my beautiful town and a donation to our small community green space will help strengthen our connectedness through gatherings (when safe to do so) and through pride in knowing a beautiful area belongs now to us all,” McLellan said in his contest entry.

Other Saskatchewan organizations selected include the Tulloch Memorial Arena at Arborfield picked by Myles Lussier and the Vanguard Fire Department through Heebner Farms.

Manitoba organizations receiving money are Grand Plains Minor Hockey at Ashville thanks to Kostur Farms and Wawanesa wee Care selected by Vallotton Farms.

In Alberta, Timik Farms picked the Camrose Boys and Girls Club, DMG Grain Farm selected Holden Agricultural Society to receive the donation and Wickstrom Farms chose the Vulcan and District Minor Hockey Association.

BASF North American head of canola seeds Brent Collins said the company wanted to find a way to recognize the contributions of farmers who work tirelessly to support Canada’s agriculture sector.

“We understand the deep connections farmers share with their communities, so in recognition of their hard work and resiliency, we are investing back into their local communities and the causes that matter most to them as a way to say thank you,” Collins said.

The winning recipients were selected by random draw from each canola growing region.
