Anglin Lake receives fun new upgrade

Plans for a new playground at Anglin Lake’s Ed Greenop Park are sliding into place.

At their most recent meeting, the District of Lakeland council approved the design. Administrator Tammy Knuttila told paNOW council has been focused on beaches that don’t have any playgrounds.

“We’ve put new playgrounds at three different beaches in three years,” she said.

Earlier this year, council was approached by a group at Anglin Lake to have the old playground replaced. Knuttila said council agreed to donate the same amount of money to that project, as they have the other ones.

“But they wanted a more elaborate playground so we told the community if you fundraise, we will accept the donations here and that allows for a tax deduction,” she said.

The projected cost of the new playground was over 88,000, which has been raised with support from the District as well as a fundraising drive that started last spring. Committee member Amanda Dueck told paNOW the committee wanted to reach out first to members of the community, as opposed to large businesses who may not have a lot of involvement.

“I think the idea behind it was if we can get the community to rally around it, they are really going to take ownership of the project and it’s something they can be proud of,” Dueck said.

When asked what motivated her to start the project, Dueck explained the old playground had become a safety risk, and she feared the thought of any child getting hurt.

As can be seen in the design drawings, the new playground has a nature theme and appearance including a unique looking bug like structure. There’s also a number of play and challenge options for children of all ages. Dueck explained she researched a bunch of different companies and decided on one that was affiliated with a cabin owner at the lake.

“One of our committee members was like ‘wow how appropriate for the lake… like a big mosquito,” Dueck said.

It’s expected the new playground will be in place for the May long weekend.
