Christmas Cheer

More families seeking help ahead of Christmas Cheer broadcast

Dec 17, 2020 | 2:15 PM

There’s even more reason to donate to this year’s Christmas Cheer Campaign with the Salvation Army in Prince Albert.

According to Major Pamela Stanger, more families have applied to receive grocery hampers and gifts for kids. In fact, the charity is prepared to help between 500 and 600 families this year and over 1,000 children.

“We’ve had a number of families who wouldn’t normally ask for help come to us realizing that we are discreet and keep information confidential and we’re an independent party, so to speak, coming to us to seek help,” Stanger said. “Some have experienced layoffs from their employment. Some are needing to ask family for some support but still need additional help.

The 71st edition of the Christmas Cheer will be broadcast on Saskatchewan Country CKBI radio, part of the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group on Friday, Dec. 18 between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. CKBI program director Danny Kid said it’s a long-standing tradition the radio station is honoured to continue.

“The Salvation Army does so much good work supporting those less fortunate and families in need throughout the year, so we’re always happy to join forces for the fundraiser,” Kid said. “With the pandemic, that need to spread Christmas Cheer is even more necessary this year.”

Although COVID-19 restrictions will prevent donors and participants from gathering at the radio station, several guests will be a part of the broadcast over the phone. Even the jolly old elf himself, Santa, is expected to call in.

Donations can be made by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1-800-725-2769) or online at www.salvationarmy.ca.
