Prince Albert upsizes support for Ronald McDonald House

Dec 9, 2020 | 7:00 AM

The people in Prince Albert and surrounding area have proven once again they have a big appetite for helping charity.

The Fries for Good fundraiser last month raised $1.8 million nationally for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), and not only did the three McDonald’s locations sell more more fries than any other city in the province, the city was also among the top three in the country.

The fry campaign ran from Nov. 10 to Nov. 30. Ken and Jan Malenfant own the Prince Albert restaurants. Ken Malenfant said he is very proud.

“Our team was very excited when we had the opportunity to showcase what we can do and they stepped up again,” he told paNOW on Tuesday.

The total money raised for RMHC is the equivalent of 10,942 nights for families at a Ronald McDonald House. A healthy portion of the funds raised will go to Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon, but the family room at Victoria Hospital will also benefit.

“We are fortunate to be part of Ronald McDonald House, and we are always excited to do something that gives something back to our community,” Malenfant said.

Across Canada, there are 34 RMHC programs – including 16 Ronald McDonald Houses, 17 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and one Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. Last year RMHC supported families from over 3,400 communities across Canada.

“Fries for Good saw Canadians coming together across our communities in support of our families, at a time when the need has never been greater,” Cathy Loblaw, CEO, RMHC Canada, said in a statement. “We’re so grateful to McDonald’s Canada, their franchisees and all crew who worked to ensure this was a great success, and to all of our guests across Canada who generously purchased fries in support of RMHC Canada.”

Funds that are raised in the Prince Albert community stay in the Community to support the families that utilize the Family Room in Prince Albert. These funds include McHappy Day funds and any donor dollars that come through the local community.
