MELFORT, Sask. – After a series of sharp declines in October Saskatchewan feeder cattle prices were higher across all weight classes.

Feeder steers averaged $1 to $3 per hundredweight higher. Steers in the 400 to 500 pound category were up $4.05

Feeder heifers in the 700 to 800-pound category had an increase of $7.71 for an average price of $163.59 per hundredweight.

Canfax reported roughly 30,000 head went through auction markets last week even with the heavy snow reported in many parts of the province.

On the downside, slaughter cow bids dropped $1.12 for D2 cows while D3 cows were $2.71 lower.

Farmers in western Canada will have another product to add to their arsenal for weed control.

Nufarm has introduced a pre-seed herbicide for broadleaf weed control for cereal growers in the black and dark brown soil zones.

ThunderHawk has three modes of action in group two, four and 14 and can be tank mixed with glyphosate.

Graham Collier with Nufarm Canada said this herbicide will help farmers achieve a cleaner start at seeding time with a pre-seed product that offers residual control of up to three weeks on volunteer canola, and management of group two resistant weeds like cleavers, wild mustard, redroot pigweed, stinkweed, shepherd’s purse, and kochia.

He said ThunderHawk can be applied before and up to two days after seeding barley, oats, and durum and spring wheat.

There will be a limited supply of ThunderHawk available for the 2021 pre-seed burndown season.
