Nov 9, 2020 | 9:49 AM

MELFORT, Sask. – Some rural municipal ratepayers are going to the polls today to vote for RM council representatives.

Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities President Ray Orb said about 78 per cent of the 192 RM councils were acclaimed.

Today’s vote will consist of odd-numbered divisions and reeve. Some even-numbered divisions were included to fill empty seats. Voting for rural municipality councils alternates between odd and even-numbered divisions every two years.

Polls are open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Local results will be posted on farmnewsNOW.com as they become available.

Business risk management programs will top the list of discussions at this month’s federal, provincial and territorial agriculture minister’s meeting.

The annual conference was to have been held in July but was postponed due to COVID. It was then rescheduled to October but delayed again because of the provincial election in Saskatchewan.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Marie Claude Bibeau said unlike the usual in person conferences held over two consecutive days the virtual sessions will be held one week apart on Nov. 20 and Nov. 27.

Other topics to be covered during the ag ministers meeting include recent fees imposed by some big grocer retailers, an update on international trade and African Swine Fever prevention measures.

The pork sector is welcoming a new organization to promote and improve industry.

The new Canadian Pork Promotion and Research Agency will work to increase market opportunities, both domestic and international and also help mitigate and manage the potential risks of African swine fever by investing in research activities that could boost on-farm biosecurity and surveillance.

Levies will be collected on imported pork products, at a rate that is no more than the minimum levy paid by producers across the country.

Similar agencies exist in other markets like the Canadian Beef Check-Off Agency that generates about $7.5 million each year towards funding initiatives that help beef producers expand their markets and increase sales.
