Mail-in results point to Ross triumph in P.A. Northcote

Alana Ross of the Sask. Party appears to have clinched the closely contested Prince Albert Northcote seat following Monday’s provincial election.

With more than half the maximum 568 mail-in ballots counted – those that were received before the election – Elections Saskatchewan reported Wednesday afternoon that Ross had a 224-vote lead over incumbent Nicole Rancourt of the NDP. That slightly extends Ross’s 222-vote lead from election night. The latest numbers breakdown can be found here.

No more than 243 mail-in ballots still remain to be counted – those received by officials after Election Day – so it appears nearly certain Rancourt can not overcome the deficit. The current result tally sits at 2,547 to 2,323. The remaining mail-in ballots will be counted on Nov. 12.

“I’m ready for this, I said to my team this is my time,” Ross told paNOW after learning the initial mail-in results. “I’m ready for this in my life and my career.

“I’m ready to work with everyone, the people who voted for us and the people who didn’t. It’s important we represent the entire Prince Albert Northcote constituency,” she said. “I want to thank Nicole too. It was very amicable at the local level and I feel that is very important.”

Meanwhile, Rancourt, who appeared to have already conceded defeat on election night with a Facebook post, reflected on her term in office.

“I’m proud of the work I’ve done and that my constituency office has done over the last four and a half years, and it was an honour to represent Prince Albert,” she said.

Rancourt said she was concerned what will happen with government with no opposition MLA in the city to challenge them.

“They might not follow through as quickly as they might if they were under the microscope,” she said.

The result looks set to ensure the governing Sask. Party secures a sweep in Prince Albert with incumbent Joe Hargrave having already clinched the P.A. Carlton seat.
