WHL announced Jan. 8 start date

Oct 14, 2020 | 4:44 PM

Amid the pandemic, the Western Hockey League (WHL) is still planning with going ahead with its season.

The WHL announced the start of the season will be on Jan. 8, 2021.

All WHL players will be reporting to their teams after the holiday break in order to get ready for the season.

Teams will also only play in their own divisions. That means the Prince Albert Raiders will just play its East Division opponents, the Saskatoon Blades, the Swift Current Broncos, the Moose Jaw Warriors, the Regina Pats, the Winnipeg ICE, and the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Last year when the Kootenay ICE relocated to Winnipeg, the Broncos were moved into the Central Division. But for the upcoming season, both the Broncos and the ICE will be a part of the East Division.

The WHL originally released “target dates” of Oct. 2 and Dec. 4, before announcing the regular season start today (Wednesday).
