Little Red River Park develops online map for visitors

Oct 11, 2020 | 10:00 AM

An electronic mapping system was introduced to the public at Little Red River Park this summer and so far, is helping guide visitors around their many trails.

The map uses GPS (global positioning systems), and GIS (geographic information sciences), to show the user all trails and combining paths, including all amenities throughout the park.

According to a media release, the application development was funded by Saskatchewan Lotteries and the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Applied Research Division. Little Red is located just north of Prince Albert and is home to a vast network of trails which are used consistently throughout the seasons. With nearly 500 hectares of natural area, patrons of Little Red River Park use these trails for walking, cycling, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and other activities.

The city of Prince Albert’s parks manager Tim Yeaman said having the map will be a positive for all visitors.

“It was identified that having a trail map for Little Red would be a good thing,” Yeaman said. “To be able to utilize that service to allow those who are coming from afar to know what kinds of amenities and trail systems we have. It just gives you a really good overview of Little Red itself.”

Developing the map was not just an idea to promote the park and attract more visitors, but also an idea to increase safety measures for those who do use the trails.

“We certainly want users to have more information about the trails,” Yeaman said. “During the winter months it could be providing updates on trail conditions.”

Yeaman added the map can easily identify to its user which trails are meant for walking, mountain biking, or cross-country skiing.

Bruce Vance, marketing, and sponsorship coordinator for the city of P.A. said the map will be a welcome addition to the park.

“All users of the park will find it very helpful,” Vance said. “It’s an expansive park and it’s great to see more people going out there. It is something that is very user friendly. It gives you more confidence too. It’s pretty easy to get turned around, all you have to do is look at your map and you can find your way back to your starting point.”

The map can be found by going to the city of Prince Albert’s website, clicking on Parks, Recreation, and Culture, then going to parks and trails, and Little Red River Park. The map is at the bottom of the Little Red River Park page.
