Exciting Theatre Developments

Season Four Commences!

Oct 9, 2020 | 9:15 AM

After our previously-scheduled fourth season was cut short by COVID0-19 in March, Spark Theatre was forced to look forwards with realistic expectations.

Audiences would be smaller, money would be tighter for everyone, and there’s always the chance that the show just can’t go on because of government health mandates.

We start Season 4.5 with a theatre development project, Spark: Ignition Play In A Day.

We specifically invited community theatre groups, who were also furloughed by COVID, to join us to make up short one-act plays, on the spot.

Literally in 24 hours.

On October 16th all teams will meet at the EA Rawlinson Centre for the Arts to receive their theme for their play.

Each team will be assigned a different theme. Then it’s time to plan! Teams will start outlining, deciding what they need from set pieces and costumes to lights and sound cues. A technician from the EA Rawlinson Centre for the Arts and Spark Theatre’s Technical Director will be on hand to help with lighting cues, sound effects and lighting. A stock of costumes, props, and furniture pieces will also be available.

The teams are welcome to stay at the Rawlinson Centre until 10:00 pm, then return on October 17th at 10:00 am for more prep and rehearsal time. At 7:00 pm the curtains go up, and the plays will be performed.

Order will be determined by random draw.

Tickets to watch these one-act plays are available at the EA Rawlinson Centre for the Arts Box Office, $15/person + GST (https://tickets.citypa.ca/TheatreManager/1/online?performance=1992).

The plays will also be adjudicated by a theater professional. Yvette Nolan (Algonquin) is a playwright, director and dramaturg.
