A woman who has helped provide animal rescue services for the Rural Municipality (R.M.) of Buckland for the past five years is being recognized for her work.

Wendy Fyrk received a certificate of appreciation from council as well as a $500 donation and a new catch pole. All of Fyrk’s expenses including transportation come out of her own pocket.

“I’m glad you let me do because… when I first started this I got questioned quite a bit like ‘oh what’s gonna happen, are you gonna give up on this after a while. I was like no because I’m stubborn and I love my animals,” she said.

Fyrk joked with council that her work goes beyond just cats and dogs, and also includes horses, llamas and anything else that has the ability to escape.

“There’s apparently a parrot out there somewhere too,” she said.

Moving forward Fyrk said she feels like she has made a positive difference and promised to continue educating animal owners.

“Not everybody is going to follow the rules but you can talk to them, and reason with them and make them understand that these guys are worth saving,” Fyrk said.

Administrator Cori Sarginson commended Fyrk for the work she has done, and stated the number of animal complaints the R.M. receives has decreased substantially since Fyrk offered to take up the job.
