Still no clear start date for hockey in the province

Aug 12, 2020 | 5:24 PM

Hockey families across the province wondering when their seasons will start will have to wait a little bit longer for that answer.

Kelly McClintock, the general manager of the Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA), said in a statement on Wednesday the SHA does not have the green light from the provincial government or the Saskatchewan Health Authority to announce when games can commence at minor, junior and senior levels.

“The SHA has been working cooperatively with the provincial government and the Sask Health Authority on a Return to Hockey Plan for the upcoming season. Currently the Provincial Government and the Sask Health Authority are not prepared to provide a set date to the SHA of when games of any kind can begin,” McClintock’s statement read.

In fact, games will be off the table until Sask Hockey and the Saskatchewan Health Authority are able to determine a date.

The statement did shed some light on what teams can expect in the meantime.

Teams across the minor, junior and senior levels can be formed and hold practices or camp sessions with a maximum of 30 people participating on the ice at any given time. The entire camp can include up to 50 people, as per the “mini-league” rule in the Re-Open Saskatchewan guidelines.

Tournaments and travelling out of province will not be allowed until at least the new year. Sask Hockey will reassess the ruling on both tournaments and out-of-province travel then.
