Road repair remains incomplete in Midtown

Pools of oil and large cracks remain scattered throughout the 300 block of sixth St. E in Prince Albert’s midtown area..

In an interview with paNOW last week, the City’s Roadways Manager Brent Kennedy explained canola oil applied to the unpaved street, to suppress dust had not fully absorbed.

Another layer of sand was added but as Wednesday morning this week, there were still clear signs that more work was needed to finish the job.

Kennedy said the hot weather softened the material, but he assured paNOW a crew would likely be back again Wednesday to go over it again.

“Within time that’ll tighten up, but that’s all we can do with it,” he said.

The city began using canola oil as an environmentally-friendly alternative to oil on some streets four years ago.

In most cases there are no problems, but sometimes the balance between the suppressant and the gravel road isn’t quite right, resulting in a sticky situation like the one on Sixth St. E.

Chemistry is also a factor and Kennedy has explained part of the problem that occurred in the Midtown block was that an oil-based suppressant previously applied to the street likely prevented the canola oil from being absorbed fully.
