15-year-old Fry becomes first Sask golfer to win both amateur women’s and junior provincials since 2010

Brooklin Fry can’t stop winning golf tournaments and accomplishing rare feats nobody in the province has done in the past decade.

After winning the 102nd Saskatchewan Amateur Women’s Championships at the Legends Golf Club in Warman on Thursday, Fry became the first golfer to hold both the women’s provincial title and the Saskatchewan junior title at the same time since Anna Young did back in 2010.

Fry, the sharpshooter from Shell Lake, won both the Under-19 and Under-17 championships on July 16 in Swift Current.

Fry said she had a goal set to win both tournaments at the beginning of the year.

“It was really awesome. It feels really cool to do that,” Fry told paNOW. “I was told that I was the first girl since 2010 to win both juniors and women’s in the same year—so that felt really awesome.”

Fry finished the three-round tournament with 223 at 7-over-par, six strokes better than last year’s champion Kathy Ziglo from Saskatoon, who always seems to find her way near the top of the provincial leaderboard.

Both Fry and Ziglo have developed a friendship through golf, with Ziglo often sending some advice and words of encouragement to the younger Fry when they are playing at other events.

“I look up to Kathy lots. I think we are pretty close,” Fry said. “She’ll always text me when I’m in different tournaments and give me advice and say ‘oh, you got this’ and things like that. I was really excited when I found that I got to play with her all three days. I love playing with her.”

Fry headed into the concluding round Thursday two strokes back of the reigning champion, and shot a 73, the best score of the day, to come away with the victory. Ziglo shot an 81, her worst scoring outing of the week to fall to second place.

Regina’s Autumn Neiszner and Yorkton’s Ella Kozak both shared third place at +17.

Danny Klughart vaults to the top

Meanwhile, after an outstanding 10-under-par 62 on Thursday, Danny Klughart flew up to the top of the leaderboard at the 109th Saskatchewan Men’s Amateur Championships in Warman.

Klughart was sitting in seventh place after two rounds of play at one-under-par, but now is fighting with Saskatoon’s Ty Campbell for the top spot. Klughart won the Men’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur last year as well.
