Goat yoga coming to Prince Albert

Jul 20, 2020 | 2:30 PM

The Prince Albert Optimist Club has been forced to get creative with fundraising amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their latest offering is goat yoga – coming next month.

The event is being put in partnership with Inspire 30. Instructor Kristy Hoornick told paNOW goat yoga is for people of all ages and ability levels.

“It’s just fun,” Hoornick told paNOW. “You get the atmosphere of animals around you for animal therapy. You don’t have to be a super yogi person.”

Hoornick explained all the goats in attendance are from a hobby farm and have been bottle-fed so they’re well socialized and used to people. One friendly lamb is also expected to participate.

The unique fitness class will raise money for the Snoezelen room at Ecole Vickers Public School. The specialized therapy room uses lights, music and objects to create a soothing and stimulating tactile experience for children with developmental disabilities.

George Lewko with the Optimist Club told paNOW the group had originally planned to use their annual fall gala to raise money for upgrades in the room. Since that event was cancelled due to the pandemic, they’ve shifted their focus to a number of smaller fundraisers.

“We had to get creative to see what we could do,” he explained.

The Optimist Club is hoping to raise $50,000 for upgrades to the Ecole Vickers Public School Snoezelen room. The club contributed to the creation of the room in 2001 and Lewko said some of the equipment is worn out and needs to be updated.

Over the years, Lewko said the room has had a profound impact on students, some of whom come from other schools to use it.

“Some of these kids they may not have ever even come out of their shell,” he said. “And this room will let them come out of their shell maybe just for a few second but you just see that joy in their face and their smile and you know you got to them.”

There are four classes of goat yoga scheduled for Saturday Aug. 15 at the Prince Albert Exhibition Grounds. As of Monday afternoon, there were five tickets left.
