Groups encouraging people to be safe around water

The Saskatchewan Branch of the Life Saving Society wants to remind the public about being safe on the water.

This comes on the heels of a boy tragically drowning last week at Sucker River. The society’s CEO Shelby Rushton said it is important for everyone to be cautious. She added weather conditions can change quickly and make it challenging for even strong swimmers.

“We have to be very careful, adults, children, seniors all ages,” she said.

Rushton said the province is seeing water levels rise all across the water system. She explained with these rising levels water bodies are now deeper and there is more current which can cause issues.

The life saving society CEO said it is crucial for people to remember to keep an eye on young children around water and also make sure to wear life jackets. Rushton said it is especially important for weak swimmers to wear life jackets.

“You never know when you’re going to walk off a shelf or drop off in the lake,” she said.

Parkland Ambulance said this past weekend paramedics were called to Candle Lake after two girls tubing behind a boat collided with another vessel. One of girls was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Lyle Karasiuk, director of public affairs with Parkland Ambulance said when pulling someone behind a boat it is important to have someone who is keeping an eye out.

“Please make sure that there is somebody in the boat who’s a spotter,” he said.

Karasiuk said it is also important for people who are operating watercraft to have the proper certification to do so. He added it is also crucial for everyone on board to be wearing a life jacket in case they end up over board and possibly knocked out.

“It’s going to do nothing for you when you’re floating in the water unconscious,” he said.
