Cal Henderson will have to pay over $1,500 in fines and surcharges, for choosing to drink and drive.

On Thursday, during a hearing at Prince Albert Provincial Court, Henderson entered a guilty plea to a charge of impaired driving.

The incident happened on May 3. RCMP told paNOW a vehicle was observed driving erratically on Highway 969, which runs past the Montreal Lake Cree Nation (MLCN) reserve. The vehicle was soon after stopped on Highway 2 North. Henderson’s blood alcohol content was measured at 0.15 – almost double the legal limit.

In addition to a $1,200 fine, Henderson was also ordered to pay a surcharge of $360 and cannot drive for one year.

Henderson was acclaimed to his current position of band councillor last March at the band’s nomination meeting.

As per the band’s election act, the offices of Chief and Councillor shall immediately become vacant when the person holding that office is convicted of a criminal offence that affects their ability to give effective leadership and may include any offences intending to corrupt morals, disorderly conduct, or involve drugs or alcohol.

According to the MLCN website, Henderson remains listed as a councillor and has a number of responsibilities including justice, housing, land resources and membership registration.
