Local women receive $500 4-H scholarships

Jul 3, 2020 | 10:00 AM

Despite having to postpone the 2020 Prince Albert Regional 4-H Beef Show and Sale, the organizing committee was still able to move forward with the sale of the charity steer and awarded two scholarships this year.

Makenna Bloom, a senior member of the Wild Rose 4-H Beef Club, was the recipient of the Dwayne Fremont Trucking Award of Merit. The 18-year old from the Holbein area, will attend SAIT in Calgary this fall, after being accepted into the diagnostic medical sonography program (ultrasound technician).

“Being in high school last year I never received any scholarships because I wasn’t expecting to go into college right away so having that money and getting me that step forward is going to help me a lot,” she said.

Bloom was with the 4-H program for three years, but told paNOW she gained a lot of valuable leadership skills, and will miss working with the youth.

This year’s recipient of the Steen Agencies and SGI Canada Scholarship is Carlton grad Gage Grassick, a senior member of the West P.A. 4-H Beef Club.

“Every year a new winner is picked and it’s such an honour for everyone who has won it, just to have the support throughout the community,” she said.

Grassick has been with the 4-H club for 12 years, and told paNOW the experience has shaped who she is today.

“4-H has taught me valuable life lesson that I will be able to carry throughout my life such as public speaking, responsibility and taking care of an animal,” she said.

Despite the uncertain times, Grassick said she is looking forward to the next chapter in her life. She has been accepted into the College of Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan and will start her course work in the fall.
