Resort village elections delayed

Jun 25, 2020 | 10:00 AM

The 2020 elections for the District of Lakeland and the Resort Village of Candle Lake have been moved from July 25 to Aug. 29.

The five-week delay comes as a result of the provincial government’s recently approved changes to the Election Act regulations, which give the Chief Electoral Officer the power to change election dates to reduce public health risks. As a result of COVID-19, there are heightened concerns related to group gatherings.

For the District of Lakeland, all five council positions and the position for reeve are up for election in 2020. The notice of call for nomination will be done by July 15, and nominations will have to be filed by Saturday, July 25, at 2 p.m.

For the Resort of Village of Candle Lake, the positions of mayor and four councillors will be on the ballot. Nominations will be received at the village office from July 2 to July 24 during regular business hours, and also on July 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Advance polls are scheduled to take place on Aug. 22.

The resort village of Candle Lake will also accept mail-in ballots, and voters have until Aug. 14 to register.
