The Prince Albert Food Bank is getting support from some local businesses.

Tuesday afternoon at the Co-op food store, Feeding our Future made up of Lake Country Co-op, the Broda Group, B&B Construction Group, Conexus Credit Union, Lakeland Ford and Lakeland Hyundai donated $10,000 and nearly 300 food bags. There were also $350 collected in other donations.

The donation Tuesday capped off a food drive which ran from June 15 to 21 at the Co-op food store. Kim Scruby, executive director for the P.A. Food Bank said the contribution is appreciated, especially during the pandemic.

“We’re busy right now in partnership with a lot of other community organizations, like Community Cares Kitchen, senior’s advocacy and what they’re doing,” he said.

Scruby explained the donation is also coming at a good time as they have not been seeing a lot of food donations. He added as more restrictions start to be lifted, they are expecting to see the demand for hampers grow.

“We’re expecting to go up by about 50, 60 per cent once everything’s back to normal,” he said.

Scott Newsom, managing partner for Lakeland Ford and Hyundai explained Feeding our Future usually provides food to schools so they can feed kids who come to school without a lunch. He said with schools being forced to close they had some left-over funds and felt making a donation like this would be a good way to make use of those funds.

“There’s a number of programs in the city that have really stepped up and reached out and helped the community, so we’re just happy to be part of it,” he said.

Tim Keller, CEO of Lake Country Co-op said the Feeding the Future Group has also been working to support the community food program running out of Parkland Hall, which has been providing support to families since COVID-19 became an issue. He added being part of the initiative with the other businesses is nice.

“We’re just happy to be a part of it,” he said.
