Historical society ready to open when allowed

The Prince Albert Historical Society is preparing to open the doors to all facilities sometime this summer.

However, when this does happen the tea room and food services will be closed.

“This year due to COVID-19, together we decided that it probably wouldn’t be beneficial for Heejung’s House to reopen,” P.A. Historical Society Manager Curator Michelle Taylor said.

Taylor added museums in Saskatchewan are not allowed to reopen doors until the second part of phase four in the province’s reopen plan. No date has been set for this phase to start.

“The board had asked me earlier in the spring to prepare for an opening, so I have some staff in line to start, so all I would have to do is recall them,” she said.

The historical society currently has three seasonal staff employed who have been working on other projects. One of these projects is developing digital content to share on Facebook. The historical society is able to bring these staff on as those salaries are covered by grants.

Taylor said the historical society is currently in a stable financial position, which is not the same for all museums. She explained if the current situation continues into the fall, changes may have to be made.

Taylor added they are ready to welcome the public whenever the province and city give museums the greenlight.

“Even if we get an August 1 opening date, we will open up this summer,” she said.
