P.A. woman’s quest to complete half marathon becomes family affair

Jun 21, 2020 | 4:00 PM

Prince Albert’s Sue Guidinger has turned a lemon into lemonade

The 66-year-old was supposed to compete this weekend at the annual marathon in Banff. But due to COVID-19, the event was cancelled and a virtual run was offered instead. Guidinger, with her whole family cheering her on at various stages along the Rotary Trail, completed the 21.5Km. late Saturday morning

“So in a way, I’m not that disappointed anymore because this is a really unique opportunity to do a half marathon with your family. I don’t think that would have happened had COVID not come along,’ she said.

Guidinger’s son and granddaughter looked after one of the water stations, and Guidinger’s 94-year-old mother was even waiting at the finish line, waving the flag. Guidinger noted that had she gone to Banff, only her husband would have been able to join her.

“How many people that run can say they did a half marathon with their whole family there. I feel so lucky,” she said.

While Guidinger’s daughter and granddaughter are all track athletes, Guidinger’s personal passion for long-distance running only started four years ago when her daughter suggested to her she try a half marathon.

“I kind of got hooked so I have her to thank for getting me running,” Guidinger said.

The run this weekend represents Guidinger’s third half marathon. In accordance with the Banff virtual run, she will submit her results online. Despite Guidinger’s obvious big achievement, she remains humble about her physical prowess.

“My whole family is pretty athletic and I was kind of the one always in the stands. So I feel like I’m just starting to catch up with them,’ she said
