P.A. baseball registration open, practices to resume next week

The crack of the bat will be ringing across the province next week, as minor baseball is permitted to start practicing once again under phase four of the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan.

Phase four is split into two parts, allowing practice and training during part one which begins Monday, and competition between teams beginning with part two on an undetermined future date.

This week, the Prince Albert Minor Baseball Association [PAMBA] has opened registration to anybody interested in playing this summer.

“Anyone that didn’t get to be a part of the winter registration [that shut down in March] can now register, so registration is wide open for all of our divisions from junior rally cap all the way through 18U,” Duane Krip, president of PAMBA, said.

There will be a number of health and safety restrictions in place, including a mandate that no players share any piece of equipment without thorough sanitizing, and even social distancing when not on the field.

“Everyone will have to be six-feet apart, so with the diamonds in P.A. we’re really only allowed no more than three kids in a dugout. The rest will have to be off on the sidelines and then called in to play,” Krip said, barring changes to these protocols once competition resumes with part two.

As a result of the lengthy shutdown, children in the community haven’t been able to take part in any team sports, which has stoked an interest in one of summer’s traditional pastimes.

“We’re opening this up to anybody that wants to come out and experience baseball, anybody that wants to experience a competitive sport in the summertime. It’s a great opportunity for anyone that may not have been able to participate in the past because of their other commitments to other activities, and come give baseball a try,” Krip said.

“Come play the sport the Blue Jays play.”

Further information about competitions will be released by the province in a future update ahead of part two of Phase four, although it has already been announced that Baseball Saskatchewan will not be holding provincial championships this summer.
