Seniors’ home residents enjoy parade by family and others

People living in a Prince Albert seniors’ home recently got a nice break.

Residents at Abbeyfield House were treated to a parade put on by family members of residents and others.

Sylvia Gent, president of Abbeyfield Society, which oversees the facility, said since the COVID-19 virus became an issue, those living in the home have not been able to carry on like they used to.

“We don’t have people coming into the house to visit, we do now have visits on the deck, but still no one is coming in to the house and still the residents don’t go out and visit anybody,” she said.

The parade, which went on Thursday of last week included a range of people from family members of residents, to staff from the facility. The parade also got support from some members of the Prince Albert Highland Pipes and Drums.

“We ended up with six pipers and a drummer,” Gent said.

Gent said people who took part in the event decorated their vehicles for the occasion. She added the residents of Abbeyfield House were watching the procession from the sidewalk and enjoyed the experience.

“They absolutely loved it and we really enjoyed doing it as well,” she said.

Dave Monette, Pipe-Major with Prince Albert Highland Pipes and Drums, also sits on the board which oversees the facility. He said the band was only too happy to get out and do their thing because they’ve been inactive and it was nice weather.

“I think our band appreciated it because we’ve had every other parade cancelled for the rest of the summer,” he said. “It was an enjoyable time for all of us.”
