CLEARWATER RIVER COVID-19

Clearwater River restores checkpoints, curfew after COVID-19 cases rise following wake service

Jun 12, 2020 | 1:37 PM

Clearwater River Dene Nation will see reserve checkpoints and curfews restored after reports of two individuals who tested positive for COVID-19. The positive tests came after a gathering at a wake service.

In a public community update Thursday evening on the local CHPN 88.9 MBC Radio Network in La Loche, Chief Teddy Clark told the community strict rules will be enforced to contain the virus on the reserve.

“There was a wake service held on Clearwater that exceeded more people than there should have been,” he said. “There was supposed to be a plan in place to wear a mask, go in and pay their respects and leave the building right away and sanitizing hands as they leave. Unfortunately, that didn’t take place for many.”

According to the chief, gatherings outside the building exceeded 10 people. The community now has four people in isolation and will continue with contact tracing.

Chief Clark has immediately restored check stops at the reserve entrance where no one will be allowed in or out for two to three weeks. Only those requiring medical and essential services will be allowed to leave. Curfews from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m have also been restored for the foreseeable future and enhanced security will monitor lakes for incoming boats.

“This is what we were worried about,” he said. “I think we moved a little too quick, too fast to remove restrictions and we will not make that same mistake this time.”

Prior to this, Clearwater River had not reported any cases for nearly three weeks. To date Clearwater River Dene Nation reported a total of 38 cases, 34 recoveries and four active. La Loche reported a total of 185 cases, 177 recoveries and three active cases expected to recover next week.

Those who attended the wake service or have come into contact with someone who has are urged to self-isolate and call the HealthLine at 811.
