Community groups being offered training program to help protect frontline workers

The Canadian Red Cross is looking to help community groups as the province reopens.

The organization will be offering the Preventable Disease Transmission Training and Equipment Program to community service organizations.

David Smith, senior manager for emergency management with the Red Cross explained the training program will help groups carry out their duties in a safer manner.

“Really the goal is to equip those organizations with the training and personal protective equipment to allow them to better deliver that front-line service and help vulnerable people,” he said.

To deliver the equipment and training program, the Red Cross has received money from the federal government. The initiative is going to be delivered across the country.

Smith said organizations interested in taking part are encouraged to go online and apply. The deadline to apply is July 7.

The training will be delivered to staff digitally online. Smith said the instruction will cover a range of important topics.

“The goal of it is to educate people on how infections are caused, some of the roots of infection and transmission, how to prevent infection and disease transmission,” he said.

Smith added people who take part will also learn about personal protective equipment (PPE), specifically the different types of equipment and how to use them properly.

The Red Cross has been accepting applications for the program for about a month. Smith said they are encouraging groups that are interested to get their applications submitted as soon as they can.

“I think we’ve had under 20 applications so far,” he said.
