Wet Weekend

Relentless rain to continue through weekend

After an unseasonably wet May, the Prince Albert area had plenty of rain to start June and can expect more in the coming days.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang said the Prince Albert area will see somewhere in the range of 20 to 30 mm of rain this weekend, but much of it will be localized.

“It’s going to vary greatly because there will be thundershowers in there. We know if thundershowers miss you, you don’t get much,” Lang said.

Another system is expected to roll in late Monday and into Tuesday, but it’s too soon to know how much precipitation that will bring.

As for this weekend, a swath across Western Saskatchewan will see the most rain, potentially upwards of 40 mm. Lang mentioned the communities of Meadow Lake, Lloydminster, North Battleford, and Kindersley are in line for significant precipitation.

The month of May brought twice the usual amount of rain to the Prince Albert area, with 88 mm accumulated compared to the historic average of 44.

Overall, Lang said the central band of the province including communities like Meadow Lake, Prince Albert, La Ronge, Nipawin, and Hudson Bay saw the most rain.

“It is a fact that the central band has been a lot wetter than everywhere else. Southern Saskatchewan is running some of their dryer numbers, they’re in the top 10 for dryness,” Lang said.

Communities in the western part of southern Saskatchewan should see some relief this weekend, but Lang said southeast Saskatchewan, which is the driest part of the province, may only get 10 to 20mm. She believes the system coming in on Monday will likely bring more to the area.
