Conservation service dealing with dumping in local RM

There are issues with illegal dumping in a Prince Albert area rural municipality.

Brett Diemert, the inspector with the Conservation Officer Service in P.A. said there are sites in and around the RM of Buckland where people dump waste on a regular basis during this time of year.

“Of course, we saw that again this spring,” he said.

Diemert said recently his office has been getting more calls from people to report improper dumping. He credits this to the public being more aware of the issue and what constitutes proper disposal.

“They’re more apt to call us, so we’ve certainly seen an increase in reporting,” he said.

There is a range of items that people tend to throw out illegally. According to Diemert, it can range from electronics to furniture. He added in most cases the items people dump can be properly disposed of and people or companies can face large fines for not disposing of waste properly.

“In Saskatchewan, there’s a great number of avenues that … can lawfully dispose of your material,” he said.

Diemert explained people not properly getting rid of their waste can cause issues for the environment. He said if people throw out certain items they can be hazardous to the soil and overall environment.

Diemert added people who see illegal dumping activity going on are encouraged to report it, which they can do by calling the turn in poachers’ line at 1 800 667 7561.

“We sometimes have pretty good success on being able to track down the individuals responsible,” he said.
