Prince Albert Canada Day celebrations altered due to COVID-19

May 19, 2020 | 1:07 PM

In Prince Albert, Canada’s 153rd birthday celebrations like most events during the COVID-19 pandemic are being held virtually or not at all.

Heading online

The Prince Albert Multicultural Council (PAMC) announced Monday morning they are moving forward with a virtual celebration in lieu of regular festivities.

“Unfortunately we can’t be together in person at the park where we usually (hold celebrations) but we’re all in this together and it is nice to celebrate together even though we’re at our own respective homes,” Executive Director for the Multicultural Council, Michelle Hassler told paNOW.

The virtual celebrations will kick off July 1 at 12 pm with an official opening ceremony and the singing of O Canada. Several family-friendly concerts, multicultural performances, online activities, interactive demonstrations, and various other live guests. It will also include a Reconciliation and Learning ceremony.

The event will be live streamed on the Prince Albert Multicultural Council’s Facebook page.

Hassler encouraged those taking part in the online celebrations to send short videos of where participants are watching as well as what their activities for the day will include.

Cancelled Altogether

paNOW also reached out to the Royal Canadian Legion, Prince Albert Branch for an update on their Canada Day celebrations. Brenda Cripps with the organizing committee explained that due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 they would have to cancel July 1 celebrations this year.

“It was really a tough decision to make because we have been doing it for the past 50 years and we just couldn’t do it,” Cripps told paNOW.

At this time Cripps noted they may look at planning for something later this year but it hasn’t been discussed.

Chance to win

On top of their virtual gathering, Michelle Hassler is encouraging people in Prince Albert and surrounding communities to also submit videos that show how people are celebrating this year.

“It can be a dance, a song or an activity,” Hassler explained.

The videos may be used during the virtual Canada Day celebrations and can be submitted through the PAMC Facebook page Messenger or by e-mailing info@pamcsk.com. Of the submitted videos three will be chosen to receive prizes, with the winners being announced live on Canada Day.

The videos should be between one to three minutes long and must be submitted by June 12 to be considered.
