Imperial School student awarded prestigious scholarship

A grade 12 student from Imperial has been awarded one of four scholarships from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.

Students from across the province had the option of submitting an essay or producing a video in the open competition.

Mackenzie Van Damme will receive the grand prize of $4,000.

“Since I decided I was going into agriculture I thought this would be a really good opportunity to push my future forward,” she said.

Van Damme’s essay highlighted the importance of agriculture in her community, the evolution of her family’s grain farm and the unique opportunity producers have to connect with consumers.

“I love how much freedom you have. I love being a part of the farm and I love watching the drill go by in front of our yard. There’s not a thing about it I don’t like,” she said.

The pandemic has altered her final semester in high school but she is continuing with classes.

“It’s been different doing online schooling finishing out my year. It’s been hard not seeing my classmates everyday, but we have been keeping in touch and planning some ideas for our graduation,” she said. “I have all of my regular teachers. I don’t know they do it but they do a really good job.”

Van Damme said she plans to attend the University of Saskatchewan where she will study agronomy and minor in animal science.

Three other students will receive $2,000 scholarships. They are Makenzie Olsen from Tisdale, Isobel Kinash of Wishart and Marci LeBlanc from Estevan.
