McDonald’s Canada will start importing beef as Canada’s beef supply chain struggles to meet current demand amid COVID-19.

The restaurant chain, which prides itself on using only Canadian beef, said in a statement its change in policy is due to limited processing capacity at Canadian suppliers like the Cargill plant near High River, Alta.

McDonald’s said it will start sourcing beef from its pre-approved suppliers and facilities outside of Canada effective immediately but it will continue to buy as much Canadian beef as possible and supplement the remainder with imports.

The company added it is also temporarily removing its Angus burgers from menus in Canada. Restaurants may sell them until supplies run out.

Spring wheat exports have dropped while durum exports remain strong.

Canadian producers delivered roughly 525,000 metric tonnes of wheat into the Canadian elevator system during week 37. Total deliveries are now 15.44 million metric tonnes, down one per cent from last year.

There was a significant increase in durum deliveries with 15 per cent more going to elevators.

Total durum exports hit 3.44 million metric tonnes which is up 22 per cent from last year.

Clean Seed Capital Group has entered into an agreement with Exro Technologies.

The companies will begin to amalgamate EXRO’s symbiotic systems into Clean Seed’s SMART Seeder.

The companies also plan to develop aftermarket retrofit accessories.
