Weather trends up heading into the weekend

Apr 17, 2020 | 12:42 PM

Following a very cool start to April, it appears the winds of change may be blowing some more pleasant temperatures through the Prince Albert region.

Environment Canada is forecasting a Friday afternoon high of 7 C with a good chance of showers.

“I think we’re looking at quite a nice day today. Temperatures are climbing up towards seasonal values,” Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, Terri Lang told paNOW.

Lang acknowledged Prince Albert has been quite chilly, coming in far below normal highs of 11 C and normal lows of –2 C.

“It’s been way below. I’m talking 6-7 degrees below seasonal values…When we’ve been struggling to get above the 0 C mark, we know we are running below average,” she said.

Friday’s warmup will be accompanied by some wind.

Prince Albert residents can expect the temperature to fluctuate over the next couple of days before levelling out by the middle of next week to normal.

“Most of the long-term weather models are showing some kind of ridging (in the jet stream). When we get these upper ridges that means the jet stream is getting to the north of us,” Lang noted when that happens temperatures tend to be warmer.

Accumulated snow may also quickly recede as positive temperatures lead to rain instead of snow.

Lang cautioned motorists and pedestrians to be wary of icy sections which may accumulate because of snow melt during the day which freezes overnight on sidewalks and roads.
