As of April 9, there are 278 cases of COVID-19 in Saskatchewan.

Of that number, seven are new cases. There are eight patients in hospital and there have been 12 more recoveries.

The total number of recovered cases across the province is 115. There are 160 active cases.

Six of the eight hospital patients are receiving inpatient care, while two are in intensive care.

Of the 278 cases across the province 122 are travellers, 96 have community contacts (including mass gatherings), 20 have no known exposures and 40 remain under investigation by public health.

In Saskatchewan, 27 cases are health care workers, but may not have sourced the infections at work.

There are 138 cases in the Saskatoon area, 58 from the Regina area, 52 from the North, 15 from the South, 10 from the central region and five from the Far North.

There are 15 cases involving people aged 19 and younger, while the remainder are adults.

In the 20 to 44 age range are 120 cases, 95 are in the 45 to 64 age range and 48 are in the 65-plus age range.

Three people have died from the virus in the province.

Up until today, there have been 16,672 COVID-19 tests performed in the province. Yesterday Premier Scott Moe said was the single highest number of tests conducted in one day so far.

“Another significant milestone is that for the first time the Roy Romanow Provincial Lab has processed over 1,000 tests in a day, with 1,051 tests processed yesterday. We will continue to ramp up testing and contact tracing with a target of process over 1,500 tests per day by the end of this month,” he said. “High levels of testing and contact tracing are keys to reducing the spread both now and in the weeks ahead when we begin to lift restrictions and reopen businesses and services in communities across Saskatchewan.”

The province has the second highest testing rate per capita compared to other provinces.

Emergency Measures?

Moe was asked about a report suggesting the federal government was pondering whether to invoke the Emergencies Act, which would give the federal government significant powers they could use in the fight against COVID-19.

Moe said he and other premiers have had discussions about that move, primarily to say they don’t believe invoking the act is necessary at this point.

“We have provincial acts in place here in Saskatchewan and in many provinces — virtually all provinces and territories — and we don’t see that the federal Emergencies Act would do anything that the provinces aren’t already doing and collaborating closely on,” Moe said.
