Fleeing suspect receives two-year prison sentence

A man who rammed a police vehicle while attempting to escape capture received a two-year prison sentence to be followed by a one-year probation.

Dency Herman, 26, entered guilty pleas in Prince Albert Provincial Court today, March 24, to various charges including dangerous driving causing bodily harm, assaulting police officers with a weapon, fleeing from police, and possession of methamphetamine.

The pursuit last September was initiated after a report of a stolen vehicle in the 1300 block of Seventh St. E. The chase ended with a crash on Highway 3 West toward Shellbrook. The impact of the crash between the suspect vehicle and the officer’s car, caused the officer’s car to roll into the ditch. Fortunately the officer was not seriously hurt but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

At the time of the incident, Herman was wanted for previous crimes related to failing to stop for police, as well as possession of stolen property over $5,000. At the sentencing hearing earlier this month, Herman pleaded guilty to those charges as well.

Nine months of remand credit have been accumulated, so Herman has roughly 15 months of jail time left to serve as of March 9.

Herman also was issued a five-year driving prohibition, a 10-year firearms prohibition, and a DNA order.
