FSIN declares state of emergency

A state of emergency has been declared by the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) executive as a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

“Many of our First Nations are not prepared for this COVID-19 pandemic as it continues to escalate in our region” FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron stated in a media release. “Some of our 74 member First Nations do not have health services or access to necessary supplies and medicines to combat the spread of COVID-19 and cases are continuing to increase across the province.”

The media release also states the extreme challenges already facing First Nations are being heavily and continuously compounded every day. Cameron noted the little resources in some communities have been stretched beyond capacity and bands still have not seen any funds or supplies come to the nation.

“We are also fielding requests from off-reserve members who are also struggling in the urban centers but don’t have the resources for some of the most basic needs,” Cameron said. “Funding allocations must be immediate and sent directly to the First Nations.”

The FSIN represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of the Treaties, as well as the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
