Punk art on display at downtown gallery

Prince Albert residents will have the opportunity to take in a unique art show on Thursday night as the basement of the Gail Carlson Gallery on Central Avenue is devoted to punk art.

Artist Emma Jean told paNOW the exhibition is a chance for the public to see alternative artwork not traditionally found in fine art galleries. Instead of wine and cheese, patrons will be served peanut butter and jam sandwiches.

“It’s that punk aesthetic, it’s kind of DIY,” Jean said. “If there’s no opportunities for doing what you want to do, you just do it yourself.”

The three other artists featured in the show are Curtis Kerr, Malaika Zbesheski Charbonneau and Jonathan Harrison-Kendrick, all from P.A. or Saskatoon. Musician Stephen Williams will be creating a live soundscape for the night.

Jean, who is also the lead singer of the P.A.-based punk rock band Rhymestone, sees a small but significant punk scene in Prince Albert.

“I’m not trying to design something that’s not already there,” she said. “I think having more opportunities to gather some critical mass will only make it stronger.”

The Thursday night show will be the first time the basement of the Gail Carlson Gallery is used for an exhibition. For Carlson, events like this, organized by young emerging artists, are an important part of her vision for the gallery and studio she opened two years ago.

“The idea of this building is to be that community where people contact each other,” Carlson said. “Come in, turn off your cellphone and enjoy.”

The punk art show will begin at 8 p.m. Entrance is through the back door. Cover is $5.
