Ferster scores first hat trick in historic night at the Hauser

Thursday marked the final time that the Beardy’s Blackhawks would battle against their rivaling Prince Albert Mintos at the Art Hauser Centre. Back in November, Saskatchewan Hockey Association announced their reshuffling of their Midget AAA league and left the Blackhawks out of their plans, marking their final season in the league.

Both teams huddled around centre ice for some extra long handshakes and some photos. Even Blackhawks’ Brett Cameron and Mintos’ Gage Helm, who had a bit of glorified gloves-on scrap during the third period, came together and posted for a quick picture.

But the player who will remember the game the most will undoubtedly be Mintos forward Ashton Ferster. Ferster scored his first Midget AAA hat trick of his career to lead his Mintos to an 8-4 victory over the Blackhawks.

Ferster scored all three of his goals where he usually does, either right in front of the net or pretty close to it. His first was a one-timer on the power play at bottom of the left circle to put the Mintos up 2-1 in the first period. He tipped in a puck out of midair for his second for the eventual game winner, and greased in a rebound in the third to make it an 8-4 final. Chase Bertholet, who finished the game with four assists, had the primary assists on Ferster’s first two goals.

Dawson Brace had a goal and two assists for the Mintos. Josh Peppler and Ty Bahm each had a goal and a helper. Gage Helm and Kody Willick both also scored for the Mintos.

Cole Duppereault led the way for the Blackhawks with a pair of goals and an assist. Captain Robert Pizzey had a goal, two assist night. Ethan Bear also scored for the Blackhawks.

The game was chippy throughout the contest as one would expect from two longtime rivals, but exploded about six minutes into the third period. Mintos forward Dallyn Peekeekoot was given a boarding major for hitting Blackhawks defenceman Teagan Koehler. Peekeekoot was ejected, which started a play in which 21 penalty minutes were handed out. That led to the Cameron, Helm tangle tango.

The Mintos will host the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre for their lone contest of the weekend. The Blackhawks will host the Saskatoon Blazers at 6 p.m. at the Willow Cree Memorial Sport Centre, and then the Warriors on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
