Prairie Optimist Cup

Many Prince Albert swimmers returned to competition this past weekend by swimming their fastest times yet.

After the Christmas break, members of the Prince Albert Sharks began their training again on January 6 in preparation for the Prairie Optimist Cup, held in Regina January 17-19.

In total, 15 swimmers from Prince Albert participated in the event. A goal for swimmers at meets is to beat their previous best times and many in the club achieved just that.

Here are highlights from the swim meet:

Sophie Bilodeau came first in the 100- and 200-metre breaststroke and fifth in the 50-metre breaststroke. Sophie, 15, swam the fastest 200-metre breaststroke for both boys and girls for all age categories. She also placed third in the 200-metre individual medley and third in the 4 X 100-metre medley relay.

Liam Murphy achieved “AA” times in 50-metre freestyle and 50-metre breaststroke. He also came fifth in the 200-metre individual medley and sixth in the 50-metre breaststroke.

Natasha Coertze achieved “A” times in 50- and 100-metre freestyle and qualified for the junior provincial championship, which will be held in Moose Jaw in March. She achieved personal best time in all of her events.

MacKenzie Emery placed third in the 4×100 medley relay race.

Abigail Anderson-Woodsworth swam personal best times in all of her events.

Soren Hansen earned an “AA” time in 50-metre freestyle. He had personal best times in all of his events and earned six “A” times.

Sarah Alam had personal best times in 50-metre butterfly, 100-metre backstroke and 200-metre individual medley.

Dani Boisson had personal best times in 50- and100-metre freestyle, 50- and 200-metre breaststroke, 50-metre butterfly and 100-metre individual medley.

Camryn Cooling swam personal best times in 50-metre freestyle and came third in the 4×100 medley relay race.

Clara Gelhorn came second in 50-metre freestyle, third in 50-metre butterfly, fourth in 100-metre freestyle and fifth in 50-metre backstroke.

Mackenzie Naytowhow had personal best times in 50- and 100-metre freestyle and 50-metre butterfly. She placed third in the 4×100 medley relay race.

Avery MacDonald swam personal best times in all of her events.

Sophie MacDonald had a personal best time in 50-metre freestyle.

Jenna Pshebnicki earned personal best times in all of her events.
